Ticos won’t Escape their Group
Costa Rica coach Alexandre Guimaraes is quoted in his country’s papers as saying he believes Costa Rica has what it takes to make it to the second round. His reasoning:
“Our options are open. We are neither bigger nor smaller than Poland and Ecuador,” Guimaraes said.
I don’t know about Ticos fans out there, but to me this quote doesn’t exactly inspire confidence. Guimares might be correct that his team is neither bigger or smaller than its Group A opponents, but note that he doesn’t say it is better. Because it isn’t.
Costa Rica struggled in the early stages of qualifying and was able to turn the ship around after Mexico and the United States had already qualified. With 10 players coming back from a team that didn’t escape the first round in 2002, and arguably facing a tougher draw than it did that year, I don’t see Costa Rica coming out of Group A.

DonĀ“t be so sure. Recently CR playing with a B team, was winning 2 – 0 against France’s A team, finally we losted 2 – 3, but it proved we can give the fight in Germany.

I’d agree… In fact, I think the Ticos have the ability to beat a suspect Germany team in the first match to open the WC. How about that one? What a great way to open the world’s greatest sporting event!!!
Seriously, look at Germany’s projected squad. Who is going to score goals for them?
Prediction… 1-0 Ticos.

costa rica knows how to control in a high level game, remember in every world cup that this team has played, they play against brazil, they know how to play with the big boys plus argentina didn’t make it out of the first round in 2002. don’t count them out even Pele said “there is no small team in soccer” you play them all like they won a world cup like champions.

If the Ticos get trounced in game one against the Germans, it will probably be better for their chances in the next two matches.
with Germany playing at home… it’s going to be an insane thing for the Ticos to win. and if they play for a draw, i can’t see them winning anywhere else. play to win.
