Politically Correct Costa Rica

The March 1 Costa Rica friendly with Iran is very close to being cancelled due to political pressures arising from Iran’s controversial stands on nukes and Israel. The Costa Rica Football Federation is itself torn by the debate, the president in favor, others against. The decision should be made soon, not too much time remaining. Hopefully it is in favor of the game: reaching out to those you may disagree with, putting aside politics for a couple of hours and experiencing that which unites the world than that which divides it. This whole controversy is a little puzzling. One wonders who Costa Rica is trying to please as there is scarcely a direct conflict between the ticos and any other country. All precedent is in favor of the game going forward. Even at the height of the cold war “free” nations played against the “unfree” ones regularly in tournaments and other events the political tensions actually adding to the excitement. Ah, the good old days…
