No option but to beat Ecuador
If Costa Rica wants to advance to the second stage of the World Cup, it must beat Ecuador on Thursday. There’s no way around it. No wonder the president of the National Football Federation said the game will be a war between brothers. A war he hopes Costa Rica will come out as winners, naturally. In preparation for the game, coach Alexandre Guimaraes coordinated only one training session on Sunday, after deciding to drop the initially scheduled morning training. Not wanting to increase the risk of further injuries to the team – defender Gilberto Martinez left the team after reinjuring his left knee -, Guimaraes thought it would be better to give the players more rest. Training shall resume in full on Monday.

[...] THE BIG PICTURE This is win-or-play-one-more-and-then-go-home for Costa Rica, who must beat Ecuador if they hope to get through the first round. More on that from blogger Bruno here, but let’s all take a moment to think back to how suprisingly good Ecuador looked beating Poland and how thin the Costa Rican defense was against Germany. A win against Costa Rica wouldn’t exactly make it a fairy tale run, but it would set up a delicious final first round game against Germany. [...]
