Costa Rica’s Saprissa # 80

March 5th, 2006 | By: Ted Veler | 3 Comments »

One of Costa Rica’s two grands, Deportivo Saprissa, the other being the LDA (Liga Deportiva Alajuelense), is ranked #80 in the world’d club rankings by the Federation of Statistics and Football in Wiesbaden, Germany. The club, who are the current CONCACAF champions, placed third in the last world club competition, are proud to be celebrating this achievement and are only surpassed in North America by the higher ranked Chivas of Guadalajara and Monterrey, both of Mexico. What Saprissa, the “S”, as they are also known, and the Chivas have in common, is that they are both owned by mexican super millionario Jorge Vergara. Ranking of number 80 in anything doesn’t seem like worth celebrating, but to put it in perspective this puts the Costa Rican club higher than Porto of Portugal, and La Coruna of Spain. This ranking is led by Liverpool, Inter Milan, Bayern, Milan, and Arsenal.

The Costa Rican people have a tendency to use a lot of diminutives for just about everything, and in the spanish language this results in many words ending with -tico, -ticas, etc. Ticos actually refers to all things Costa Rican, not just their national team. The team is also knows as the “sele” but that is just short for the “seleccion”.

Hi Ted-

An impressive comeback win last night for Saprissa (which I know of only from your blog!). Solis looked tough. What’s up with the stadium in which the match was played?

Thanks-
Trent
