Costa Rica Squad: Reactions

April 26th, 2006 | By: Ted Veler | 1 Comment »

Players missing from Costa Rica’s provisional squad for the World Cup criticized manager Alexander Guimaraes in the media on Tuesday.

Guimaraes will announce his 23-man roster on Monday, but his training squad was already without Lokomotiv Moscow forward Winston Parks, top-scoring Alajuelense forward Rolando Fonseca, and Oscar Rojas of Mexico’s Veracruz.

“I was left out, not because of a lack of ability, but for other reasons,” Fonseca told local media without elaborating.

Parks was saddened by the decision but didn’t want to talk about it, according to relatives.

“He has his group, and some of us didn’t fit in. I’m not resentful,” Rojas said.

Parks scored in Costa Rica’s 1-1 tie against Turkey at the 2002 World Cup. Among other 2002 World Cup veterans not included were Pablo Chinchilla, Rodrigo Cordero, Carlos Castro, Steven Bryce, William Sunsing and Mauricio Wright.

Well done to Oscar Rojas for not bitching and moaning and making more headlines to distract the team. Of course, he has to be very disappointed, but he’s not crying conspiracy like Fonseca appears to be.
