Costa Rica loses 4-0 to Ukraine

May 28th, 2006 | By: Bruno | 4 Comments »

Costa Rica suffered its second straight loss in friendlies played this week prior to the World Cup. On Sunday, playing in Kiev, the team lost 4-0 to Ukraine, which also qualified for the tournament in Germany. After holding a scoreless draw at the start of the game, the team suffered three quick goals in ten minutes - at the 28th, 33rd and 38th minutes, with Nazarenko, Vorobei and Kalynychenko, respectively. The last goal, scored by Bielik, came in the 56th minute, when both teams seemed conformed with the final result.

Costa Rica played poorly again, just slightly improving on the way it played against Catalunya last Wednesday (which it lost 2-0). Not playing well in attack, the team showed lapses of concentration in defence that proved fatal, since the Ukrainians did not waste their chances this afternoon. Once the score had reached 3-0, it was obvious the team lacked the motivation to try and improve its game to try to reach a tie - not that it would have mattered even if it showed this motivation. Coach Alexandre Guimaraes just hopes the team can improve in its next and last official friendly prior to the World Cup, against the Czech Republic on Tuesday.

I’ve always said that 3 teams from North America are way too many. This time we have 4. There will be riduculous high scores.
I suggest only one team from North America and more from Europe. I mean, c’mon, Trinidad and Tobago, c’mon. Luxemburg can beat them. San Marino have a good chance too. C’mon. What an insult to people’s inteligence to have Costa Rica and Trinidad.

I also believe 4 teams is absurd from Nth America, especially when you think that the stars of this confederation are USA and Mexico.

A little harsh on Costa Rica and T&T. People were probably thinking the same thing when the likes of Cameroon first made the WC. Look at them now.

The Costa Ricans seem to be ruining their chances of going anywhere in the world cup. Lets make this Paulo Wanchopes last 4 games instead of 3 eh………………………

Come on, don’t be so harsh on the Concacaf teams. It’s called the World Cup because of the romance of teams from all over the WORLD. Every team that made it deserved their place. We’ll see if Trinidad & Tobago are really that good in the next World Cup. If they qualify, they probably are. As for Europe, I’m sorry, fourteen’s enough places to go around. Those that didn’t make it weren’t good enough. Period.
