Costa Rica Faces the Magician

May 5th, 2006 | By: Ted Veler | 1 Comment »

Poland will depend on Maciej Zurawski to score against the Ticos when they meet in Germany 2006 next month. His modest first FIVE years for Poland only netted him 5 goals and it was widely assumed that he was jinxed when it came to playing for the national side. But he took it to heart, and things changed. In the qualifications for Germany Zurawski scored seven times and Celtic Glasgow paid 3.1 million euros for his services, the most ever for a Polish player. Then he proceeded to justify himself inthe eyes of the scotish fans by scoring 19 goals and earning the nickname the “magician”. He is having the greatest 12 months of his career and Poland will depend on him to put them on the board.

Judging by the title, I thought that this post refered to the Ecuadorian magician who is presently “charming” all the stadiums that his team will be playing in. Zurawski’s nickname is “Magic”, kind of like “Magic” Johnson the famous basketball player of the 80’s.

But it is true, Zurawski at this time is Poland’s best player, a pacey striker who makes some of the best off-the-ball forward runs in today’s football. We’ll see how he does in Germany, though.
